Introduction:

Meaningful conversations are the fast track to worldly insights. Dijian Eccles shared his thoughts with me in an earlier post, where he opened up on his journey through 2020 and the techniques he used to cultivate peace of mind.

Here we talk about acceptance and the road towards a stronger sense of Identity.

On Identity:

Dijian:

Let me ask you — How was your time in social isolation?

Simi:

I could have done more.

Dijian:

What do you think held you back?

Simi:

I had predefined ideas about how I should live out my goals, and because of that, I decided that I wasn’t going to even try if I couldn’t meet all my made-up conditions.

It’s easy to call it Perfectionism, but the truth of it was that I wasn’t ready to receive my blessings.

I was blaming my circumstances for the way I was thinking.

I realise now that its all in your head and it makes more sense to do the first draft and improve, than aim for the perfect picture.

It’s a process right?

Dijian:

First off — I get you. I’ve been in spaces like that, you should check out Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin.

That’s another book I’ve wanted to spend time with this year. The point is you have to take command of yourself when your in that place because ground zero is the perfect platform for you to build your empire.

In my case, I went back to my journals and reviewed the issues I was writing about. I was scanning through pages looking for patterns in my thinking that led to the same negative outcome, and I clocked.

My drive for my passion resulted in self-sacrifice, which forced me to lose clarity on what I was striving for.

Would you be so passionate about writing that you write so hard you don’t even know why you write?

Simi:

Nope.

Dijian:

I ended up making videos and content that wasn’t in line with what I dreamed of when I first started out with this project all those years ago. Which is weird be-

Simi:

Unique!

Dijian:

Haha!

Yes, unique! It’s unique, in that it showed me what it showed you — a dislike for my currents circumstances. You have to decide what kind of person you want to be — right?

Some look around for the scenarios they want, and if they can’t find them, they complain, and then some create them.

That time showed me how to regain focus using my experiences through my journal.

In 2021, I plan to create more short films, given we’re now in a stronger position with our brand.

As you said, there are times to receive blessings. We weren’t able to start thinking like this until we had done that groundwork and realised who we are as an organisation in this space.

That’s what 10 years does to you…

Bottom Line:

  • Finding yourself takes patience and consistent iteration.
  • Sometimes you’re not ready to face the truth about which could mean acceptance is your first step.
  • In either case, pay attention to your thoughts and set goals so you can receive blessings in the future.
